President Donald Trump is “firm” in his support of transgender athletes, his transition team has announced.
The president tweeted on Friday morning that he is “strongly in support” of transgender Olympians, including gymnasts Caitlyn Jenner and Bruce Jenner.
“Our Nation must be strong in the fight for gender equality, and in support of the incredible women and men who represent the U.S. in the Olympics,” the transition team said in a statement.
In his tweets, Trump said he would sign a transgender military ban into law.
Trump has not signed any legislation restricting transgender people in the military, and there are no pending efforts to repeal his executive order that banned transgender people from serving in the armed forces.
Last month, the U:H:C:N group of leading trans athletes, which includes former Olympians Katie Ledecky and Caitlyn Meza, said they were considering boycotting the Olympics and had already started preparing for a boycott of the Winter Olympics in February.
